  • Use:
  • Labeled Indications: otitis media, pneumonia, bacterial rhino sinusitis, skin infections, urinary tract infections.
  • Off-Label Indications: Prophylaxis or treatment (animal or human bite)/
    Acute exacerbation of Bronchiectasis/ COPD
  • Dosing:
    • Adult:
      Oral: Immediate release: 500 mg every 8 to 12 hours
      Extended release: 2 g every 12 hours.
    • Geriatric: Refer to adult dosing.
    • Pediatric:
      _Infants <3 months : 30 mg/kg/day divided every 12 hours
      _Children, and Adolescents <40 kg: 25 mg/kg/day in divided doses twice daily OR 45 mg/kg/day in divided doses twice daily (severe infection)
      _Children and Adolescents ≥40 kg: 250 mg every 8hours OR 500 mg every 8 hours (severe infection).

  • This drug may affect certain lab tests. Tell lab workers that you take this drug.
  • Do not use longer than you have been told. A second infection may happen.
  • Take a missed dose as soon as you think about it.
  • Birth control pills and other hormone-based birth control may not work as well to prevent pregnancy. Use some other kind of birth control also like a condom when taking this drug.
  • Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan on getting pregnant.
  • Some people may have very bad and sometimes deadly side effects when taking a drug.
  • Tell your doctor if you have any signs of an allergic reaction, like rash; hives; itching; red, swollen, blistered, or peeling skin with or without fever; wheezing; tightness in the chest or throat; trouble breathing, swallowing, or talking.

Common Side Effects of Augmentin

  • It is common to have diarrhea when taking antibiotics. Rarely, a severe form of diarrhea called C diff–associated diarrhea (CDAD) may happen.
  • CDAD may happen while you are taking an antibiotic or within a few months after you stop taking it.
  • Call your doctor right away if you have stomach pain or cramps, very loose or watery stools, or bloody stools.
  • Do not try to treat diarrhea without first checking with your doctor.
  • A very bad skin reaction (Stevens-Johnson syndrome/toxic epidermal necrolysis) may happen
  • Get medical help right away if you have signs like red, swollen, blistered, or peeling skin (with or without fever); red or irritated eyes; or sores in your mouth, throat, nose, or eyes.
