FADIC Shortlisted in 2020 UK Antibiotic Guardian Award
Background
- In 1945, Sir Alexander Fleming – Nobel Lecture said, “After the Discovery of the Penicillin, the antimicrobial resistance (AMR) can happen when giving an insufficient dose of the antibiotics, it will not kill the bacteria, but will educate them on how to be resistant”.
- In 2016, the UK report predicted that in 2050, the AMR mortality rate will be 10 million cases per year, which will be more than cancer mortality, and other diseases, till now after COVID19 Pandemics.
Who We Are?
- The First Arabian Drug Information Centre (FADIC), is a professional health care organization in the Middle East. Stewardship School was started in 2018, After signing up with CDC AMR challenge using interactive education through FADIC online system, with the best use of technology.
Aims
- To apply antimicrobial stewardship starting from setting goals and gap analysis
- To prepare an action plan with effective timelines
- To develop strategies for its intervention, metrics, and outcomes
- To develop an effective antimicrobial stewardship guidelines, mobile Apps, policy and toolkits
- To measure the outcome of stewardship
- To prepare a valid dashboard to measure your work practice
- To apply in different settings; Acute Care, Ambulatory, Long-term, Outpatient (OPAT) & Public
- To design antimicrobial stewardship quality improvement projects and Key indicators (KPIs)
- To maintain strategic and sustainability plan for antimicrobial stewardship

What We Do?
FADIC Stewardship School provides an innovative strategy applying stewardship in multiple healthcare settings, to limit the spread of AMR & improve patient outcomes with an evidence-based education to help learners to build-up their stewardship dashboards, and a real simulation for ASM which is necessary after the COVID19 Pandemics.
- Lecturer Guidelines
- Mentorship Reviewer System
- Pocket Guide for Antibiotic Pharmacotherapy
- More than 1000 Infographics, Summarized Tables, and Toolkits
- Case-Based Presentations
- Roleplay Simulation Experiential Learning
- Interactive Learning Activities as Project-Based Learning & Workshop Activities
Methods (Antimicrobial Stewardship School Learning Modules)
- Module 1: ASP Systematic Thinking Approach
- Module 2: ASP Evidence-Based Guidelines
- Module 3: ASP in Acute Care Setting
- Module 4: ASP in Long-Term Care (LTC)
- Module 5: ASP in Ambulatory Care
- Module 6: Outpatient Parenteral Antimicrobial (OPAT)
- Module 7: ASP Strategic & Sustainability Plan
Communicate hospital wide to empower ASP implementation such as infection prevention & control (IPC), microbiology, nurse stewardship, dental, surgical, outpatients, & ICU, others & public. The outcomes were impressive, either implementation of stewardship, maintain an evidence-based antimicrobial guideline, metrics, effective dashboards, ASP policy, five-year stewardship strategic plan, smart technology antimicrobial guides and toolkits. Establishing ASP committee term of reference & multidisciplinary stewardship team, rapid response team to create an effective guideline. Maintain stewardship rounds and journal club discussions.
Case Study
- Context: Want to learn how to apply antimicrobial stewardship in patient care areas, and hospital wide
- Contribution: Systematic thinking stewardship in Infectious disease cases, pharmacokinetics/pharmacodynamics and other modules
- Outcome: Create antimicrobial guidelines, intervention dashboard and outcomes
- Next Steps: Apply antimicrobial stewardship hospital wide, outpatient and public
Conclusion
- It is time to be an antibiotic steward to decrease AMR especially after the COVID19 pandemics. There is a need to gather collaboration to promote the implementation of stewardship and share information about the novel ASP with quality improvement & scholarship, hopefully spread this idea globally.
