COVID-19 Vaccines: Global Challenges and Prospects Forum Recommendations

  • On November 4 and 5, 2020 the 11th Annual KAIMRC Global Forum was organized as a G20 related event entitled COVID-19 Vaccines: Global Challenges and Prospects
  • The leading COVID-19 vaccines presented use different technologies including:
  • Non-replicating viral vector based vaccines, ChAdOx1 nCoV-19/AZD1222 vaccine developed by Oxford-AstraZeneca
  • Nucleic Acid, DNA- or RNA- based Vaccines that include the mRNA-1273 vaccine that is being developed by Moderna
  • Protein based vaccines, CoV RBD219-N1 Vaccine from Baylor College of Medicine

Mefloquine enhances the activity of colistin against antibiotic-resistant Enterobacterales in vitro and in vivo animal studies

  • Infections caused by carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales are difficult to treat. Colistin is the last resort drug for the treatment of these infections, but colistin resistance has emerged in animals and humans.
  • This study investigated the in vitro efficacy of mefloquine in combination with colistin against 114 antibiotic-resistant Enterobacterales isolates including NDM-1, ESBL and mcr-1 containing strains from a broad range of origins.

Combination Ceftaroline and Daptomycin Salvage Therapy for Complicated Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) Bacteremia Compared with Standard of Care

  • Complicated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) bloodstream infections (BSI), particularly those with delayed culture clearance, are associated with high mortality.
  • Combination therapy with daptomycin and ceftaroline (DAP+CPT) represents a novel therapeutic approach to MRSA BSI due to synergistic bactericidal activity.
  • This study aimed to compare DAP+CPT to historical standard of care (SoC) for the treatment of complicated MRSA BSI.

AMR research in a post-pandemic world: Insights on antimicrobial resistance research in the COVID-19 pandemic

  • The COVID-19 pandemic is predicted to impact the transmission of bacterial infections and the emergence of antibiotic resistance (AMR).
  • The likely positive influence on antibiotic resistance that social distancing, increased awareness and the use of interventions to prevent the transmission of COVID-19 has had could also be counteracted by the reported excessive use of broad
  • Antimicrobial stewardship programmes and AMR focussed research activities must remain active during the COVID-19 and future pandemics

Acute covid-19 and multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children

  • Children with acute covid-19 can present with non-specific symptoms. Exclude covid-19 in children with fever and respiratory tract symptoms or loss of taste or smell, especially if there is possible exposure to others with the virus
  • Consider multisystem inflammatory syndrome (MIS-C) in children presenting with fever and abdominal symptoms particularly if they develop conjunctivitis or rash.
  • MIS-C can have overlapping symptomatology with disease processes that require prompt treatment, such as sepsis, toxic shock syndrome, myocarditis, and meningitis.

First UK Case Report of a Patient with Pseudomonas Mendocina Bacteraemia

  • Pseudomonas mendocina is a gram-negative bacterium belonging to the Pseudomonas genus.
  • It rarely causes infection in humans.
  • Here, they present the case of a 64-year-old man, with a complex past medical history, who presented to a UK hospital with signs of sepsis, including high-grade fever.
  • Admission bloods showed raised inflammatory markers consistent with infection.
  • On day two of admission, blood cultures tested positive for Pseudomonas mendocina, as confirmed by MALDI-TOF.
