1 – Reduced Alternative Insulin Dosing in Hyperkalemia: a Meta-Analysis of Effects on Hypoglycemia and Potassium Reduction

• Recent studies have identified that reduced alternative intravenous insulin doses, such as 5 units or 0.1 units/kg, may reduce the risk of hypoglycemia compared to standard doses of 10 units in patients treated for hyperkalemia. However, some studies suggest that these alternative doses may reduce the ability to lower serum potassium.
• This meta-analysis was performed to determine the impact of alternative insulin dosing on hypoglycemia and potassium reduction in patients with hyperkalemia.
• Alternative insulin dosing strategies for hyperkalemia management resulted in less hypoglycemia and severe hypoglycemia without compromising potassium reduction compared to standard dose.

2 – Glucagon: Its Evolving Role in the Management of Hypoglycemia

• Insulin and other agents used to treat diabetes predispose people to hypoglycemia, which can be life threatening.
• Glucagon is an emergency medication that can save lives by quickly raising glucose in people who are unconscious or unable to consume glucose due to severe hypoglycemia.
• This article discusses the evidence surrounding new glucagon formulations compared to the original glucagon emergency kit including ease of use, efficacy, and safety with a focus on important patient counseling points and relevant clinical information on hypoglycemia.

3 – Use of an antiviral mouthwash as a barrier measure in the sars-cov-2 transmission in adults with asymptomatic to mild COVID-19: a multicenter, randomized, double-blind controlled trial

• This article determine if commercially available mouthwash with ß-cyclodextrin and citrox (bioflavonoids) (CDCM) could decrease the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) salivary viral load.
• This trial supports the relevance of using CDCM on day 1 (4 hours after the initial dose) to reduce the SARS-CoV-2 viral load in saliva.
• For long term effect (7 days), CDMC appears to provide a modest benefit compared to placebo in reducing viral load in saliva.

4- Candesartan as a tentative treatment for COVID-19: a prospective non-randomized open-label study

• This study aimed to investigate whether the addition of candesartan to the standard care regimen improved the outcome in patients with coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19).
• Candesartan significantly reduces the length of hospital stay after adjustment for covariates.
• All primary outcomes improved significantly in the non-obese subgroup receiving candesartan.

5 – Computational study of the therapeutic potentials of a new series of imidazole derivatives against SARS-CoV-2

• Owing to the urgent need for therapeutic intervention against the SARS-coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic, they employed an in silico approach to evaluate the SARS-CoV-2 inhibitory potential of newly synthesized imidazoles.
• The inhibitory potential of the compounds against SARS-CoV-2 drug targets – main protease (Mpro), spike protein (Spro) and RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp) were investigated through molecular docking analysis.
• These novel imidazole compounds could be further developed as drug candidates against SARS-CoV-2 following lead optimization and experimental studies.

6 – Drug combination therapy for emerging viral diseases

• Effective therapeutics to combat emerging viral infections are an unmet need.
• Historically, treatments for chronic viral infections with single drugs have not been successful, as exemplified by HIV and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections.
• Combination therapy for these diseases has led to improved clinical outcomes.
• Although novel drug development through traditional pipelines remains a priority, in the interim, effective synergistic drug candidates could be rapidly identified by drug-repurposing screens, facilitating accelerated paths to clinical testing and potential emergency use authorizations
