Covid-19: Antibodies protect against reinfection for at least six months, study finds

  • The presence of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies confers subsequent immunity in most people for at least six months, a study of healthcare workers in Oxford, UK, has found.
  • Reports of SARS-CoV-2 reinfection had been rare, suggesting that initial infection confers protective immunity, and that small scale studies suggest that this immunity is antibody mediated rather than cell mediated.
  • The results showed that positive antibody test results were associated with a lower rate of subsequent PCR positivity, suggesting a protective effect of the immune response to the original infection.

Rare SARS-CoV-2 antibody development in cancer patients

  • SARS-CoV-2 antibody development and immunity will be crucial for the further course of the pandemic.

  • In the present study, they analyzed the development of antibodies in 77 patients with an oncologic diagnosis 26 days after positive RT-qPCR testing for SARS-CoV2.
  • Surprisingly, antibody development was detected in only 6 of 77 individuals with a confirmed history of COVID-19.

Low vitamin D status is associated with coronavirus disease 2019 outcomes: A systematic review and meta-analysis

  • Observational studies suggest that the risk and clinical prognosis of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) are related to low vitamin D status; however, the data are inconsistent.
  • They conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to assess the association between low vitamin D status and COVID-19.
  • This systematic review and meta-analysis indicated that low vitamin D status may be associated with an increased risk of COVID-19 infection.
  • Further studies are needed to evaluate the impact of vitamin D supplementation on the clinical severity and prognosis in patients with COVID-19.

The impact of COVID-19 on private and public primary care physicians: A cross-sectional study

  • Primary care physicians (PCP) are at a high risk of contracting COVID-19 as they manage patients with fever or respiratory symptoms, but it is intuitive that private and public practice PCPs may face different challenges during this pandemic.
  • This study compared work- and non-work-related concerns, COVID-19’s impact on personal and professional lives, and perceived pandemic preparedness between private and public PCPs in Singapore.
