1- Monday Infectious Disease News – 22th March

1 – Do long-term antibiotics for acne fuel antimicrobial resistance?

  • With rates of antimicrobial resistance continuing to rise, the need to conserve antibiotics is becoming increasingly urgent.
  • In the case of acne, a limited number of alternative treatments means that antibiotics are frequently prescribed first-line, often for prolonged periods and, unsurprisingly, experts are becoming concerned about the effect this could be having on antimicrobial stewardship efforts

2 – Association between Chronic Statin Use and 30-Day Mortality in Hospitalized Patients with COVID-19

  • This study aims to determine the association between chronic statin use and mortality in patients hospitalized with COVID-19.
  • Patients with COVID-19 taking statins had similar 30-day mortality to those not taking statins, after adjusting for relevant covariates.
  • Although this is partly influenced by a higher prevalence of risk factors for more severe COVID-19 presentation not entirely adjusted for by the Charlson Comorbidity Index, these data would not support statins as a likely therapeutic intervention for COVID-19 in the hospital setting.

3 – Validation and Performance Comparison of Two SARS-CoV-2 IgG/IgM Rapid Tests

  • Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) causes a disease called COVID-19.
  • In this study, the IgG/IgM Rapid Test Cassette and the Prima COVID-19 IgG/IgM Rapid Test for the detection of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies in blood, serum and plasma samples collected from patients up to 48 days after symptom onset in Saudi Arabia were validated.
  • Overall, both tests showed poor performance and cannot be utilised for COVID-19 diagnosis as a point of care test or to determine seroprevalence.

4- Therapeutic Potential of Metformin in COVID-19: Reasoning for its Protective Role

  • SARS-CoV-2 infections present with increased disease severity and poor clinical outcomes in diabetic patients compared with their non-diabetic counterparts.
  • While several antidiabetic medications are used to manage blood glucose levels, this study discusses the multi-faceted ability of metformin to control blood glucose levels, attenuate endothelial dysfunction, inhibit viral entry, and infection and modify inflammatory and immune responses during SARS-CoV-2 infections.
  • These actions make it a viable candidate for drug repurposing and the higher ground against the SARS-CoV-2 induced tsunami in diabetic COVID-19 patients.

5 – The Silent Pandemic: Emergent Antibiotic Resistances Following the Global Response to SARS-CoV-2

  • Surface disinfectants have been heavily used during the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Antibiotic therapeutics are often prescribed to those hospitalized with COVID-19.
  • Their increased use is anticipated to result in emergent antimicrobial resistances.
  • Averting AMR requires better disinfectants, antibiotic stewardship, and diagnostics.

6 – Prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 Antibodies in Pediatric Healthcare Workers

  • This study aims to determine SARS-CoV-2-antibody prevalence in pediatric healthcare workers (pHCWs).
  • Anti-SARS-CoV-2-IgG prevalence was low in pHCWs but increased rapidly over time.
  • Both working in the ED and exposure to a COVID-19-positive contact were associated with antibody-seropositivity.
  • Ongoing universal PPE utilization is essential.
  • These data may guide vaccination policies to protect front-line workers.
