1 – Could Statins Do More Than Lower Cholesterol in Patients With COVID-19?

• A history of myocardial infarction, congestive heart failure, and hyperlipidemia have all been associated with an increased risk of in-hospital mortality from COVD-19.
• Observational studies by Gupta and others have suggested that taking statins might not only lower blood cholesterol levels, but also reduce the risk of dying from COVID-19.
• Preclinical studies indicate that statins could worsen COVID-19. That’s because statins, along with several other classes of drugs used to treat atherosclerotic heart disease and its risk factors, upregulate angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) receptors, which happen to be SARS-CoV-2’s gateway into cells.
• Yet theoretically, the authors noted, the same drugs may improve the clinical course of COVID-19 by reducing vasoconstriction, inflammation, and oxidation.

2 – Effect of Bamlanivimab vs Placebo on Incidence of COVID-19 Among Residents and Staff of Skilled Nursing and Assisted Living Facilities

A Randomized Clinical Trial

• Preventive interventions are needed to protect residents and staff of skilled nursing and assisted living facilities from COVID-19 during outbreaks in their facilities.
• Bamlanivimab, a neutralizing monoclonal antibody against SARS-CoV-2, may confer rapid protection from SARS-CoV-2 infection and COVID-19.
• This study aims to determine the effect of bamlanivimab on the incidence of COVID-19 among residents and staff of skilled nursing and assisted living facilities.
• Among residents and staff in skilled nursing and assisted living facilities, treatment during August-November 2020 with bamlanivimab monotherapy reduced the incidence of COVID-19 infection.

3 – The effectiveness of the TWO-DOSE BNT162b2 vaccine: analysis of real-world data

• COVID-19 mRNA vaccines were shown to be highly efficacious in preventing the disease in randomized controlled trials; nonetheless, evidence on the real-world effectiveness of this vaccine is limited.
• Study objective was to evaluate the effectiveness of BNT162b2 vaccine in preventing SARS-CoV-2 infection and COVID-19-related hospitalization and mortality..

4- Assessment of Data Supporting the Efficacy of New Antibiotics for Treating Infections Caused by Multidrug-resistant Bacteria

• Infections caused by multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria are a major public health threat.
• This study aimed to assess the data supporting US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval of new agents aimed to treat MDR bacterial infections and the data provided by postmarketing studies.

5 – Risk Factors for Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19)–Associated Hospitalization: COVID-19–Associated Hospitalization Surveillance Network and Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System

• Data on risk factors for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)–associated hospitalization are needed to guide prevention efforts and clinical care.
• This study sought to identify factors independently associated with COVID-19–associated hospitalizations.
• The findings elucidate groups with higher hospitalization risk that may benefit from targeted preventive and therapeutic interventions.

6 – Double-blind, Randomized, Placebo-controlled Trial With N-acetylcysteine for Treatment of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Caused by Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19)

• A local increase in angiotensin 2 after inactivation of angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) may induce a redox imbalance in alveolar epithelium cells, causing apoptosis, increased inflammation and, consequently, impaired gas exchange.
• They hypothesized that N-acetylcysteine (NAC) administration could restore this redox homeostasis and suppress unfavorable evolution in patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)
• Administration of NAC in high doses did not affect the evolution of severe COVID-19.
