Prevalence of Co-infection at the Time of Hospital Admission in COVID-19 Patients, A Multicenter Study
- Bacterial infections may complicate viral pneumonias.
- Recent reports suggest that bacterial co-infection at time of presentation is uncommon in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).
- This study is sought to develop and apply consensus definitions, incorporating clinical criteria to better understand the rate of co-infections and antibiotic use in COVID-19.
- Using multidisciplinary consensus definitions, proven or probable bCAP was uncommon in adults hospitalized due to COVID-19.
- Empiric antibiotic use was high, highlighting the need to enhance antibiotic stewardship in the treatment of viral pneumonias.

American Society of Hematology 2021 guidelines on the use of anticoagulation for thromboprophylaxis in patients with COVID-19
- Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)–related critical illness and acute illness are associated with a risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE).
- These evidence-based guidelines of the American Society of Hematology (ASH) are intended to support patients, clinicians, and other health care professionals in decisions about the use of anticoagulation for thromboprophylaxis for patients with COVID-19–related critical illness and acute illness who do not have confirmed or suspected VTE.

Tocilizumab-an option for patients with COVID-19 associated cytokine release syndrome: A single center experience”, a retrospective study-original article

- Tocilizumab, effective treatment option for critically sick patients of Covid-19 by reducing their oxygen requirement drastically and so the ICU stay, median hospital stay and mortality.

Infective endocarditis due to Corynebacterium species; clinical features and antibiotic resistance
- Corynebacterium species are often dismissed as contaminants in blood cultures but they can also cause infective endocarditis (IE) which is a severe condition.
- Antibiotic resistance of corynebacteria is increasing making treatment challenging.
- Antibiotic resistance of corynebacteria is relatively common but resistance towards vancomycin could not be detected in vitro.

Prospective cohort of fluvoxamine for early treatment of COVID-19
- This study reports a real-world experience using fluvoxamine for coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19) in a prospective cohort in the setting of a mass outbreak.
- Overall, 65 persons opted to receive fluvoxamine 50mg twice daily and 48 declined. Incidence of hospitalization was 0% (0/65) with fluvoxamine and 12.5% (6/48) with observation alone.
- At 14 days, residual symptoms persisted in 0% (0/65) with fluvoxamine and 60% (29/48) with observation.

SARS-CoV-2 infection among healthcare workers despite the use of surgical masks and physical distancing – the role of airborne transmission
- SARS-CoV-2 is transmitted mainly via respiratory droplets.
- A key question in COVID-19 pandemic is whether it could be transmitted via airborne route as well.
- This study reports for the first time SARS-CoV-2 nosocomial infections, despite using surgical masks and physical distancing. It may provide a possible evidence for airborne transmission of SARS-CoV-2.
