New Variant of Virus that Causes COVID-19 Detected

• Viruses constantly change through mutation, and new variants of a virus are expected to occur over time.
• Recent reports indicate that about 6 in 10 cases reported in London are caused by the new variant.
• Genetic analysis of the new variant shows changes to the spikes on the virus and to other parts of the virus.
• Initial studies suggest that the new variant may spread more easily from person to person.

Association of tiered restrictions and a second lockdown with COVID-19 deaths and hospital admissions in England: a modelling study

• A second wave of COVID-19 cases in autumn, 2020, in England led to localised, tiered restrictions (so-called alert levels) and, subsequently, a second national lockdown.
• This study examined the impact of these tiered restrictions, and alternatives for lockdown stringency, timing, and duration, on severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) transmission and hospital admissions and deaths from COVID-19.

BioNTech could produce vaccine for new virus variant within six weeks, CEO says

• BioNTech could produce a vaccine for the new fast-spreading Covid-19 strain that has been found in the UK.
• They don’t know at the moment if our vaccine is also able to provide protection against this new variant.
• But scientifically, it is highly likely that the immune response by this vaccine also can deal with the new virus variants
