Do antibody positive healthcare workers have lower SARS-CoV-2 infection rates than antibody negative healthcare workers? Large multi-centre prospective cohort study (the SIREN study), England: June to November 2020

  • There is an urgent need to better understand whether individuals who have recovered from COVID-19 are protected from future SARS-CoV-2 infection.
  • A large multi-centre prospective cohort was recruited from publicly funded hospital staff in the UK.
  • Participants attended regular SARS-CoV-2 PCR and antibody testing (every 2-4 weeks) and completed fortnightly questionnaires on symptoms and exposures.
  • A prior history of SARS-CoV-2 infection was associated with an 83% lower risk of infection, with median protective effect observed five months following primary infection.

 Summaries of safety labeling changes approved by FDA—boxed warnings highlights July–September 2020

  • As part of FDA’s MedWatch program, important changes to the safety labeling of drugs and therapeutic biologicals, including boxed warnings, are posted on the agency’s website.
  • Boxed warnings are ordinarily used to highlight
    • (1) An adverse reaction so serious in proportion to the potential benefit
    • (2) Serious adverse reactions that can be prevented or reduced in frequency or severity by appropriate use of the drug,
    • (3) situations in which FDA approved a drug with restrictions to ensure safe use

Navigating the roadmap of workplace politics: Advice for new practitioners

  • Workplace politics can make new work environments stressful for new practitioners and can lead to burnout quickly if they are not navigated successfully.
  • Ask any number of students and pharmacists to define workplace politics and results will contain a multitude of explanations.
  • Perhaps the simplest definition involves the advancement of personal agendas above the interests of an organization.
  • Workplace politics remain an underlying challenge of work environments and are often learned through experience vs direct training.

Reduction of phone interruptions post implementation of a central call center in community pharmacies of an academic health system

  • A pharmacy services call center (PSCC) was implemented to centralize pharmacy phone calls and reduce interruptions of dispensing activities in 7 community pharmacies of an academic health center.
  • An evaluation was conducted to define, quantify, and compare the numbers and types of phone interruptions before and 3 months after PSCC implementation.
  • PSCC implementation noticeably decreased the amount of phone interruptions and distractions for employees.

Pharmacy-facilitated medication history program at a community teaching hospital: A pre-post study in an emergency department

  • A study was conducted to compare the accuracy of medication histories compiled by pharmacy technicians with histories obtained through the usual multidisciplinary process.
  • Of 215 patients screened, 183 were included in the study: 91 patients whose medication histories were obtained through the usual multidisciplinary process and 92 whose medication histories were collected by pharmacy technicians.
  • The study showed that the accuracy of medication histories was improved when histories were obtained by pharmacy technicians instead of via the usual multidisciplinary process.
