1 – Assessment of community pharmacists’ communication and comfort levels when interacting with Deaf and hard of hearing patients

  • Deaf and hard of hearing patients who use sign language face considerable communication barriers while accessing pharmacy services.
  • This study aims to examine the way community pharmacists interact with Deaf and hard of hearing patients in Malaysia, and their level of comfort in such interactions.
  • The results suggest that community pharmacists were neither extremely comfortable nor averse when interacting with Deaf and hard of hearing patients.
  • The lack of significant findings in terms of comfort-levels may indicate other potential drivers for their choice of communication method when interacting with Deaf and hard of hearing patients.

3 – Reducing medication‐related harm through the adoption of technology

  • There are many challenges faced in the design and delivery of the systems and services associated with the provision of medication to patients.
  • The latest WHO Global Patient Safety Challenge, launched in 2017, aims to improve medication safety by strengthening the systems for reducing medication errors and avoidable medication‐related harm.
  • A range of technology is available to pharmacy services, including those that automate medication distribution within and from these services.
  • The benefits of such technologies have been described in this study.

4- The impact of pharmacist‐led antifungal stewardship interventions in the hospital setting: a systematic review

  • This study aims to summarise the evidence on pharmacist‐led antifungal stewardship (AFS) programs in the hospital setting and to evaluate their impact on the quality of antifungal prescribing and infection management, antifungal usage and clinical outcomes.
  • Available evidence suggests that pharmacist‐led AFS interventions can improve the quality and timeliness of antifungal prescribing and reduce antifungal usage. Further research is required to assess the impact on clinical and microbiological outcomes.

5 – Pharmacists in advanced clinical practice roles in emergency departments (PARED)

  • Advanced clinical practitioner pharmacists (ACP-ps) are a potential clinical workforce and can be utilised by further training to work in the multi-disciplinary emergency department (ED) or urgent care workforce.
  • This study aims to explore experiences and clinical activity of trainee ACP-p, and opinions and recommendations of both trainees and clinical supervisors.
  • Pharmacists can successfully train as ACP-p in this setting over a two-year period.
  • This career transition needs careful management and clear structures.
  • Training ACP-p is a useful way of enhancing skills and supporting clinical services to large numbers of patients.
