2- Tuesday Pharmacy Practice News - 11th May

1 – Online pharmacy dispensing volume grows by 45% in 2020, fuelled by COVID-19 pandemic

  • The number of items dispensed from distance-selling pharmacies in England grew by 45% in 2020.
  • This is an increase on the 29 million items dispensed by distance-selling pharmacies in 2019, with some pharmacy leaders putting most of this increase down to changing habits amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • However, distance-selling pharmacies — which provide pharmacy services at a distance, including over the internet — still hold only a small share of the overall dispensing market.

2 – Impact of pharmacist-led interventions on asthma patients’ knowledge, attitudes and self-efficacy: single-blind randomised controlled trial

  • Asthma is a common chronic disease and education is a critical component of chronic disease management.
  • This study assessed the impact of pharmacist-led educational interventions on asthma patients’ knowledge, attitudes and self-efficacy.
  • Seventy-eight (78) asthma patients participated; 39 per hospital; 13 in each arm.
  • Patients in both Intervention arms possessed significantly better asthma knowledge compared to Usual Care at three months
  • These findings highlight the importance of educating patients directly, as much as possible.

3 – The Association of Physical (in)Activity with Mental Health. Differences between Elder and Younger Populations: A Systematic Literature Review

  • Physical activity is associated with mental health benefits.
  • This systematic literature review summarises extant evidence regarding this association, and explores differences observed between populations over sixty-five years and those younger than sixty-five.
  • They found inverse associations between levels of physical activity and mental health problems.
  • However, more evidence regarding the effect of ageing when measuring associations between physical activity and mental health is needed.

4- Pharmacist-led heart failure patient focus group using mobile apps-based intervention mix

  • The impact of clinical pharmacists on inpatient heart failure (HF) care has been proven in many studies.
  • Evidence regarding the use of mobile apps by pharmacists to achieve positive clinical outcomes in HF is limited.
  • The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of a pharmacist-led HF patient focus group using mobile apps-based intervention mix.
  • A pharmacist-led HF patient focus group using mobile apps-based intervention mix was found to be effective in improving clinical outcomes in HF patients.
  • Further research should be performed on long-term effects of our approach.

5 – Burnout and secondary traumatic stress in health-system pharmacists during the COVID-19 pandemic

  • This study aims to describe the prevalence of burnout and secondary traumatic stress (STS) in health-system pharmacists during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic.
  • A cross-sectional, professional pharmacy organization list server–based online survey of a target group of health-system pharmacists was conducted.
  • The survey found that over half of health-system pharmacists were affected with burnout, half with STS, and all with compassion satisfaction during the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Unfortunately, the development of burnout and STS in these health-system pharmacists may lead to several work-related consequences (eg, increase risk of medical errors, depression); therefore, addressing burnout and STS is crucial.

6 – The usefulness of an ambulatory care pharmacy performance dashboard during the COVID-19 pandemic in a complex tertiary care system

  • This study aims to describe the usefulness of an innovative “semi–real-time” pharmacy dashboard in managing workload during the unpredictable coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic.
  • They created a pharmacy dashboard to monitor workload and key performance indicators during the dynamic COVID-19 crisis.
  • Developing a dynamic, semi–real-time pharmacy dashboard during unstable circumstances such as those that have arisen during the COVID-19 pandemic can be very useful in ambulatory care pharmacy workload management.
