2- Tuesday  Pharmacy Practice News - 20th April

1 – Pharmacy students play crucial role in COVID-19 mass vaccinations

  • Many pharmacy students seized the chance to be involved in COVID-19 vaccination clinics, signing up quickly to be part of an eagerly anticipated, massive rollout.
  • In an ASHP survey of the deans of schools and colleges of pharmacy, all 42 respondents indicated they have been asked to provide student pharmacists as volunteers for COVID-19 immunization efforts.
  • Students are being tapped to assist local health systems (55% of deans reported), community pharmacies (14%), and health departments, including support for rural vaccination efforts (17%), long-term care facilities (5%), and campus vaccination efforts (29%).

2 – Impact of hydroxychloroquine on disease progression and ICU admissions in patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection

  • This study aims to evaluate whether use of hydroxychloroquine was associated with a reduced likelihood of intensive care unit (ICU) admission in patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in the early weeks of the pandemic.
  • Hydroxychloroquine use was significantly associated with increased risks of ICU admission and intubation in patients with mild, moderate, and severe symptoms of COVID-19.
  • There were no significant between-group differences in mortality with use vs nonuse of hydroxychloroquine.

3 – Responding to unforeseen disasters in a large health system

  • This study aims to describe how health systems may respond to sudden changes in operations by leveraging existing resources and to share one organization’s experience responding to the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic.
  • Organizations have the potential to respond to almost any situation if they are integrated and teams work together to build flexibility.
  • The keys to success are thoughtful maximization of existing resources and strong communication.

4- Evaluation of an Interactive Online Information Service to Improve Patient Care in the Field of Anticoagulation and Antithrombotic Therapy

  • The ClotCare Online Information Resource (“ClotCare”) was established in 2000 as an interactive patient education service.
  • In 2003, its scope of service was expanded to include clinicians and the general public, and an editorial board was added to facilitate dissemination of new information.
  • ClotCare substantially altered the actions of both health care professionals and patients.
  • These outcomes have been achieved through web‐based education and information sharing as well as “on demand” responses to questions.
  • ClotCare is a widely used resource that is highly valued.

5 – Prescribing and documentation by critical care clinical pharmacy specialists with aroundtheclock staffing: A singlecenter evaluation

  • Evidence supports pharmacists as essential team members in the intensive care unit (ICU).
  • The purpose of this evaluation was to assess the frequency, timing, and most common areas of prescribing and documentation for critical care clinical pharmacy specialists (CPSs) in a single medical center with around‐the‐clock staffing.
  • This evaluation provides details of prescribing and documentation by critical care CPSs with an around‐the‐clock staffing model.
  • This may be useful for ICU clinicians and administrators considering expanding critical care pharmacy services.

6 – What is the ideal clinical pharmacy practice model? A satisfaction comparative study

  • Current pharmacy practice models vary.
  • Unit‐based pharmacists are in charge of patients in specific locations, placing emphasis on timely order verification.
  • In contrast, service‐based pharmacists are assigned to multidisciplinary teams who provide consultations without order verification duties.
  • There are conflicting opinions regarding the ideal model in providing care. Currently, there are limited studies comparing these approaches in a specialized health care system.
  • The primary objective of this study is to compare staff satisfaction; nurses, physicians, pharmacist peers, patients, and self‐satisfaction, with respect to the three models.
  • Based on this study, the majority of the surveyed cohort, including nurses, patients, and self‐surveyed pharmacists, favored the unit‐based model.
