1 – Regional differences in COVID-19 ICU admission rates in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia: A simulation of the new model of care under vision 2030

  • Saudi Arabia has succeeded in having one of the lowest rates of COVID-19 worldwide due to the government’s initiatives in taking swift action to control both the spread and severity of the virus.
  • However, Covid-19 can serve as a test case of the expected response of the new healthcare system under Vision 2030.
  • This study used data from the thirteen present administrative regions of KSA to simulate the variations in ICU admission as a quality indicator in the five business units proposed by a new Model of Care.

2 – Implementation of Pharmacy Executive Quality and Safety Walkrounds at a Tertiary Academic Medical Center

  • Executive Quality and Safety WalkRounds (EWRs) is a tool that engages department leadership in discussion with the front-line employees to solicit feedback to improve quality and safety.
  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of the implementation of pharmacy department specific EWRs on quality and safety at a tertiary academic medical center.
  • Pharmacy department EWRs are an important and systematic process of communication between the pharmacy leadership and frontline staff.
  • Pharmacy department EWRs have resulted in safety and quality improvements at different levels in the pharmacy department.

3 – Validation of Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) Risk Factors in Predicting MRSA Community-Acquired Pneumonia at an Academic Medical Center

  • The 2019 Infectious Diseases Society of America community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) guidelines recommend antimethicillin- resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) therapy in patients with CAP based on previously identified risk factors for MRSA with an emphasis on local epidemiology and institutional validation of risk.
  • Thus, in this study they sought to assess the ability of guideline-recognized risk factors to predict MRSA CAP at our institution.

4- ASHP Guidelines on the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee and the Formulary System

  • These guidelines outline important considerations and recommend processes for formulary system management within the context of a hospital or health system.
  • Pharmacist responsibilities and roles in managing the formulary system in partnership with other healthcare professionals are embedded throughout.
  • These guidelines also provide assistance to pharmacists in the organization and operation of the pharmacy and therapeutics (P&T) committee or equivalent body, evaluation of medications for formularies and consideration of rational use of medications, and development and implementation of strategies to optimize medication use through the formulary system.

5 – Lessons learned from pharmacy learner and educator experiences during early stages of COVID-19 pandemic

  • This study aims to explore pharmacy learner (eg, resident, fellow) and educator (eg, residency program director, preceptor) experiences and lessons learned during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic.
  • The COVID-19 pandemic has positively and negatively impacted the professional and personal lives of pharmacy learners and educators, with the most notable impacts being in the areas of well-being and adaptability.
  • Future research should explore the experiences of other workforce personnel and evaluate the long-term impact on pharmacy practice, patient outcomes, and workforce well-being and resiliency

6 – Safety of Single-Dose Oral Cefixime, Intramuscular Ceftriaxone, or Intramuscular Gentamicin for the Treatment of Gonorrhea: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

  • This study aims to compare the incidence and types of adverse effects between 3 recommended treatment options for gonorrhea and to compare the incidence of injection site pain between single-dose intramuscular ceftriaxone and gentamicin.
  • The use of single-dose cefixime, ceftriaxone, and gentamicin-based regimens for treatment of gonorrhea appears to be safe and acceptable for use in practice.
