2- Tuesday Pharmacy Practice News – 7th September

1 – Optimizing Patient Data in the Time of COVID-19

  • The COVID-19 pandemic has forced society to change rapidly and in incalculable ways.
  • Pharmacists and providers must remain nimble to help patients continue receiving the medications they need, as technology now plays a central role in workflow and medication management.
  • This enormous shift has also brought opportunities to leverage data and embrace technology to meet the needs of patients and providers.
  • Health care organizations that recognize better data means better health care must choose their data expert partner carefully to make gains, improve patient care, and find a firmer financial footing.

2 – The Pharmacist’s Role in Managing Allergies

  • For many patients, allergy season can be a dreaded time of year.
  • Seasonal allergies can cause a plethora of symptoms, ranging from sneezing, runny nose, and itchy, watering eyes to shortness of breath, wheezing, swelling, and rash.
  • Luckily for these patients, there are many effective treatment options for mild to severe allergies available both OTC and by prescription.
  • In fact, there are so many available treatment options that patients may often need guidance to choose the best products for their symptoms, which is the primary place the pharmacist comes in.
  • Pharmacists are often involved in the management of a patient’s allergies from the very start.
  • Many patients will approach a pharmacist for guidance on making a self-diagnosis based on symptoms.
  • Because seasonal allergies may affect patients differently year-to-year and even day-to-day, sometimes identifying these symptoms can be nuanced and difficult.

3 – Retrospective Safety Evaluation of a Pharmacist-Assisted Total Dose Iron Sucrose Protocol in Hospital Inpatients With Iron Deficiency Anemia

  • Intravenous (IV) iron sucrose can be used for iron deficiency anemia (IDA), but little information exists on total dose infusion (TDI) of this drug.
  • At a tertiary hospital, an iron sucrose TDI protocol was implemented with staff pharmacists aiding physicians in appropriate dosing.
  • This study aims to define the safety and efficacy of this protocol in adults ≥18 years old with IDA.
  • A pharmacist-assisted iron sucrose TDI protocol for patients with IDA successfully increased serum Hgb and was well tolerated. Anaphylaxis was not reported.

4- The Impact of the Duration of Antibiotic Therapy in Patients With Community-Onset Pneumonia on Readmission Rates: A Retrospective Cohort Study

  • Recent publications have confirmed that 70% of hospitalized adults with uncomplicated community-acquired pneumonia and health-care-associated pneumonia are prescribed a duration therapy that exceeds current guideline recommendations.
  • The primary objective is to evaluate the relationship between antibiotic duration and all-cause 30-day readmission rates. Secondary outcomes include pneumonia-specific 30-day readmission rate and identification of risk factors for readmission.
  • The use of prolonged antibiotic therapy for the treatment of community-onset pneumonia was not associated with a decrease in all-cause or pneumonia-specific 30-day readmission rates.

5 – Examination of Barriers to Medication Adherence, Asthma Management, and Control Among Community Pharmacy Patients With Asthma

  • This study aims to describe the prevalence of common barriers to asthma medication adherence and examine associations between patient-reported asthma controller adherence and asthma control, therapy adherence barriers, and asthma management characteristics.
  • The use of this survey tool confirmed presence of asthma-specific barriers, thus using this specialized approach may lead to more effective, targeted counseling in community pharmacy settings.

6 – COVID-19 Delta Variant Raises Concerns for Children as School Year Approaches

  • As children return to in-person schools over the coming weeks, a spike in COVID-19 Delta variant cases among younger children is causing concern.
  • The relaxation of mask mandates and social distancing rules, the lack of COVID-19 vaccines for children 11 years of age and younger, and rising Delta variant cases among all ages could be contributing to these rising cases.
  • Although younger children most likely will not be able to get vaccinated for a few more months, experts still say that ensuring high vaccination rates among adults is the best way to protect children.
  • The most important thing we can do to protect kids under 12 who are not yet eligible to be vaccinated themselves is to ensure that as many people who are around them and who are interacting with them are vaccinated.
