2- Tuesday Pharmacy Practice News – 31th August

1 – Pharmacists Hold Key to Success of COVID-19 Booster Shot Program

  • A British study reported that the COVID-19 vaccine efficacy weakens in 3 months under Delta. For people without a health care background, this news could serve as a signal to jump ahead and try to get their booster shots.
  • As pharmacists, we are among the most trusted health care providers.
  • This is the time to think about how to market your services to your customer base so they know that you are an option for these services.
  • Letting your customers know how they should plan for a booster shot is a good starting point.
  • You should also be prepared for questions such as timing, whether they need to stick with the same vaccine, and any known adverse effects to keep the important flow of communication going.

2 – The Pharmacy as the Center of Immunization Services for the Entire Family

  • In the last year, pharmacy technicians have joined the ranks, and pharmacy at large has been instrumental in the roll-out of the COVID-19 vaccines.
  • Vaccinations in the United States are mainly provided at primary care offices, public health facilities, hospitals, and pharmacies. Collaborating with each of these location types may be the key to maximizing a pharmacy’s ability to be the vaccine hub for the family.
  • Vaccine series are great opportunities for collaboration with public health departments, as most pharmacies are more easily accessible than health department offices.
  • Building an arrangement where people who receive first doses at the health department and second (and perhaps third) doses at a community pharmacy can be productive for the pharmacy, the health department, and the patient.

3 – Pharmacy Fact: What is the Best-Selling Prescription Drug?

  • The pharmaceutical market is massive, clocking in at more than $1.2 trillion in 2020, with an anticipated growth of nearly $22 billion dollars expected in 2021.
  • Examining which drug makes up the most of that revenue, one name pulls far away from the competition.
  • Adalimumab (Humira, AbbVie) was the highest selling drug of 2020, generating a massive $19.8 billion in total revenue.
  • Adalimumab is approved for the treatment of several autoimmune diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, Crohn disease, ankylosing spondylitis, and plaque psoriasis in the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Europe.

4- Research Finds ADHD-Related Aggressive Behavior is Genetically Coded

  • An international collaboration of researchers has found several genetic variants that increase the risk of aggression in children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), according to a study by the Danish iPSYCH consortium and the Psychiatric Genomics Consortium.
  • These findings mark the first time that investigators have found positions in the genome that increase the risk of getting ADHD with disruptive behavior disorders (DBDs).
  • DBDs are child psychiatric disorders characterized by antisocial and aggressive behaviors.
  • The findings could be used to gain an understanding of the biology that leads to ADHD with DBDs, which can be found in 20% to 30% of children with ADHD, according to the study authors.

5 – Telehealth Proves of Great Value During COVID-19

  • Telehealth has become the “it factor” when it comes to communication between health care professionals and patients, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Telehealth was initially directed at serving individuals with chronic conditions, but it has now become a matter of general access to ensure patients are seen appropriately.
  • Telehealth encompasses a wide variety of concepts, from legislation to the structure of the system, and is very complex in its manner, practice, and implementation. Legislation plays a complicated role in telehealth and is typically viewed as a barrier to diffusion.
  • A main concern is, of course, confidentiality of patient information, which would be held within a mobile application or website.
  • This can be addressed by using passwords, special identifiers, and even secure forms of communication between patients and providers.

6 – Study Finds Short Naps Do Not Relieve Sleep Deprivation

  • A recent study from Michigan State University’s (MSU) Sleep and Learning Lab found that a nap during the day will not restore a sleepless night.
  • This study was among the first to measure the effectiveness of shorter naps, according to the study authors.
  • While short naps didn’t show measurable effects on relieving the effects of sleep deprivation, they found that the amount of slow-wave sleep that participants obtained during the nap was related to reduced impairments associated with sleep deprivation.
