1 – Surveillance testing reveals a significant proportion of hospitalized patients with SARS-CoV-2 are asymptomatic

  • The proportion of positive patients admitted to acute-care hospitals for reasons other than coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) is unknown. These patients potentially put other patients and healthcare workers at risk of infection.
  • The objective of this study was to define the proportion of asymptomatic patients admitted with severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2).
  • Secondary objectives were to define the positivity rate, reasons for admission, and the geographic distribution in the region.

2 – 3D printing of face shields to meet the immediate need for PPE in an anesthesiology department during the COVID-19 pandemic

  • Anesthesia providers are at risk for contracting COVID-19 due to close patient contact, especially during shortages of personal protective equipment.
  • This study presents an easy to follow and detailed protocol for producing 3D printed face shields and an effective decontamination protocol, allowing their reuse.
  • This protocol enabled the rapid production of face shields by individuals with little to no 3D printing experience, and provided a simple and effective decontamination protocol allowing reuse of the face shields.

3 – What are the sources of exposure in healthcare personnel with coronavirus disease 2019 infection?

  • Healthcare personnel are at risk for nosocomial acquisition of COVID-19.
  • This study evaluated the exposure history of hospital personnel with COVID-19.
  • Twenty-five percent of personnel with COVID-19 were exposed to an infected patient or co-worker.
  • Exposure to infected co-workers occurred in nonpatient care settings.
  • Fourteen percent of personnel with COVID-19 were exposed in the community.

4- Novel outpatient antibiotic prescribing report of respiratory infections in a pediatric health system’s emergency departments and urgent care clinics

  • A novel antibiotic tracking report for respiratory infections in a pediatric acute care network was created.
  • Encounters were analyzed without competing diagnoses to determine appropriateness of therapy.
  • Low antibiotic use was indentified for infections where systemic antibiotics are not recommended.
  • They report high first-line antibiotic use for respiratory infections where antibiotics are typically recommended.
  • Site- and diagnosis-specific variabilities require tailored antibiotic stewardship approaches.

5 – Inactivation of SARS-CoV-2 by commercially available alcohol-based hand sanitizers

  • Alcohol solutions and WHO alcohol-based liquid sanitizer formulations have demonstrated efficacy against the COVID-19 associated SARS-CoV-2 virus in previous publications.
  • Two formulated alcohol-based hand sanitizers, a gel and a foam each containing 70% ethanol, yielded complete reduction of SARS-CoV-2, with >3 log10 reductions, in suspension testing with a 30 second contact time.
  • Further research is warranted on the efficacy of alcohol-based hand sanitizers against coronaviruses on the hands and understanding the impacts of hand hygiene on transmission of COVID-19.

6 – Behavior change techniques to promote healthcare professionals’ eHealth competency: A systematic review of interventions

  • The use of eHealth is rapidly increasing; however, many healthcare professionals have insufficient eHealth competency.
  • Consequently, interventions addressing eHealth competency might be useful in fostering the effective use of eHealth.
  • This systematic review aimed to identify and evaluate the behavior change techniques applied in interventions to promote healthcare professionals’ eHealth competency.
