1 – Study Results Show COVID-19 Linked to Decline in Kidney Function

  • Kidney function has been shown to decline in individuals who had COVID-19, both severely and mildly, according to new study results.
  • The findings emphasize the critical importance of paying attention to kidney function and disease in caring for patients who have had COVID-19
  • The research done by the Veterans Affairs St. Louis Health Care System and Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis shows that individuals infected with SARS-CoV-2 have an increased likelihood of developing chronic and end-stage kidney diseases and kidney damage, according to the statement.
  • Individuals who contracted the virus but did not need to be hospitalized had a 15% increased risk of major adverse kidney events, such as chronic kidney disease, a 30% increased risk of developing acute kidney injury, and a 215% increased risk of end-stage kidney disease, according to the statement.

2 – Outpatients With COVID-19 Experienced No Significant Benefit From COVID-19 Convalescent Plasma

  • COVID-19 convalescent plasma administered within the first week of symptoms did not prevent disease progression in a high-risk group of outpatients with COVID-19, according to the results of the Clinical Trial of COVID-19 Convalescent Plasma in Outpatients (C3PO) study published in the New England Journal of Medicine.
  • The investigators sought to determine whether administering COVID-19 convalescent plasma might also be beneficial in persons who were recently infected with SARS-CoV-2 but who were not severely ill and could be treated as outpatients.
  • The C3PO trial, a randomized, controlled clinical trial, enrolled more than 500 outpatients who presented to emergency departments with mild COVID-19 symptoms during their first week post-infection.
  • The results show that convalescent plasma does not appear to benefit this particular group

3 – People Who Manage Asthma Effectively Can Improve Their Chances Against COVID-19

  • A large study conducted by USC and Kaiser Permanente Southern California has found that asthmatics who have their illness well under control have less severe COVID-19 outcomes than those with uncontrolled asthma.
  • The objective of the study was to evaluate the impact of breathing disorders on COVID-19 outcomes in a population with equal access to health care.
  • The findings suggest that patients with asthma should continue taking their asthma medications during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the study authors.

4- Moderna Submits to FDA Initial Data for COVID-19 Booster Shot, Showing Efficacy Against All COVID-19 Variants

  • Moderna submitted initial data to the FDA based on the results of a phase 2 trial that demonstrated the efficacy of a booster shot of Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine mRNA-1273. This booster shot would be administered to patients 6 months after their second dose of mRNA-1273.
  • The initial data demonstrated that the booster of mRNA-1273 boosts the neutralizing titers above the phase 3 benchmark and induces an antibody response that significantly increases geometric mean titers of all variants of the COVID-19 virus.
  • The data also showed that the safety profile of the booster shot is similar to that of the second dose of mRNA-1273.

5 – Probiotic Use May Decrease C. difficile Infection

  • A study explored the use of probiotics and the subsequent effect on the development of Clostridioides difficile (C. difficile) infection (CDI) in individuals receiving fluoroquinolones.
  • The results showed that a higher percentage of proton pump inhibitor (PPI) use in the non-probiotic group was up 20% in comparison with the group receiving the probiotic.
  • Also, individuals who were on fluoroquinolones that received probiotics had 0% of overall cases of CDI compared to 3% in the non-probiotic group, but this was not statistically significant enough to make a strong conclusion.

6 – Individuals With COVID-19 Are Most Likely to Transmit Virus 2 Days Before, 3 Days After Symptoms Develop

  • Individuals infected with SARS-CoV-2 are the most contagious 2 days before they develop symptoms and 3 days after, according to a study published in JAMA Internal Medicine.
  • The study also found that individuals with COVID-19 were more likely to be asymptomatic if they contracted the virus from a primary case that was also asymptomatic.
  • The results suggest that the timing of exposure relative to primary-case symptoms is important for transmission, and this understanding provides further evidence that rapid testing and quarantine after someone is feeling sick is a critical step to control the epidemic.
  • This study further emphasizes the need for vaccination, which reduces clinical severity among people that develop COVID.
