 1 – CDC: Breast and Cervical Cancer Screenings Declined During COVID-19 Pandemic

  • The total number of cancer screening tests received by women through the CDC’s National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program (NBCCEDP) declined by 87% for breast cancer and 84% for cervical cancer during April 2020 compared with the previous 5-year averages for that month, according to a recent study
  • The study examined the impact of COVID-19 on NBCCEDP screening services during January-June 2020.
  • This rapid decline in screenings occurred along the same timeframe that there were drastic increases in COVID-19 cases in Spring 2020.

2 – Study: Myocarditis is Rare Following Second COVID-19 Vaccine Dose

  • A retrospective case series published in JAMA Cardiology found that although there are rare instances of myocarditis—inflammation of the heart muscle—in younger men following COVID-19 vaccination, the greater risk for heart damage and death comes from COVID-19 infection.
  • Although several recent studies have suggested hypersensitivity myocarditis is a rare adverse reaction to COVID-19 vaccination that health care professionals should watch for, the investigators stress that overall confidence in vaccination should not be affected.

3 – ASHP national survey of pharmacy practice in hospital settings: Impact of COVID-19 pandemic on pharmacy operations—2020

  • Results of the 2020 ASHP national survey of pharmacy practice in hospital settings pertaining to pharmacy operational changes implemented in response to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic are presented.
  • Pharmacy directors at 1,437 general and children’s medical/surgical hospitals in the United States were surveyed using a mixed-mode method of contact by email and mail.
  • Survey completion was online.
  • The pharmacy profession responded to myriad threats to operations and patient care during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.

4- Social dynamics of a population-level dashboard for antimicrobial stewardship: A qualitative analysis

  • This study aims to evaluate antimicrobial stewards’ experiences of using a dashboard display integrating local and national antibiotic use data.
  • Social dimensions of AS tool use emerged as distinct from, and equally important as decision support provided by the dashboard.
  • Successful stewardship tools should be designed to support both the social and cognitive needs of users.

5 – Face masks to prevent transmission of COVID-19: A systematic review and meta-analysis

  • Based on the status of the COVID-19 global pandemic, there is an urgent need to systematically evaluate the effectiveness of wearing masks to protect public health from COVID-19 infection.
  • This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated the effectiveness of the use of masks to prevent SARS-CoV-2 transmission.
  • This study demonstrated the protective effects of masks against COVID-19 infection on HCWs and other populations.
  • The detailed analysis in different populations, countries and mask types were conducted to better clarify the effectiveness of wearing masks.

6 – Healthcare worker’s perspectives on use of memes as an implementation strategy in infection prevention: An exploratory descriptive analysis

  • New implementation strategies, such as social media platforms, are being used to help disseminate and implement evidence-based practices.
  • This project reports on an Infection Prevention Week Meme Contest and describes healthcare worker’s perspectives on using memes as an implementation strategy to improve knowledge and compliance with evidence-based infection prevention practices.
