2 – Impact of pharmacist-led interventions on asthma patients’ knowledge, attitudes and self-efficacy: single-blind randomised controlled trial

  • Asthma is a common chronic disease and education is a critical component of chronic disease management.
  • This study assessed the impact of pharmacist-led educational interventions on asthma patients’ knowledge, attitudes and self-efficacy.
  • Seventy-eight (78) asthma patients participated; 39 per hospital; 13 in each arm.
  • Patients in both Intervention arms possessed significantly better asthma knowledge compared to Usual Care at three months
  • These findings highlight the importance of educating patients directly, as much as possible.

3 – A Novel Educational Approach for Improving Medication-related Problems in Community Pharmacies

  • Community pharmacists have the responsibilities of identifying and resolving medication-related problems (MRPs), thereby improving patient safety.
  • This study aims to deliver a series of clinical case scenarios using WhatsApp and assess the impact of this method on the ability of pharmacists to identify MRPs.
  • Clinical case scenarios delivered by WhatsApp may be useful for improving the ability of pharmacists to identify MRPs and for shortening the mean time needed to resolve MRPs.

4- The role of pharmacists in opioid stewardship: Protocol

  • The opioid crisis is a worldwide public health concern.
  • In North America, evidence suggests that the increase in opioid prescriptions correlates with the observed increase in opioid-related mortality and morbidity.
  • Pharmacists are in a strategic position to promote effective opioid stewardship as they have a central role on healthcare teams.
  • A scoping review will be conducted to identify and summarize evidence on the role of pharmacists in opioid stewardship and identify areas for future study.
  • This review has the potential to inform future research, impact pharmacy practice, and drive policy change.

5 – How do patients develop trust in community pharmacists?

  • Pharmacists frequently self-describe as “the most trusted health care professional” in society.
  • Beyond the rhetoric of such self-promoting statements, there is little empirical evidence regarding how trust between pharmacists and patients is formed, nurtured, and sustained.
  • This exploratory qualitative study was undertaken in early 2020 to characterize trust-enhancing factors in community pharmacy practice.
  • For pharmacists to truly live up to the moniker of “most trusted health care professional” it is important to better understand how trust is built and sustained, and to consider opportunities to focus on specific trust-enhancing behaviours that ultimately support better patient care and outcomes.

6 – The rate of return to a pharmacy education investment in the U.S.

  • Potential pharmacy students need a financial frame of reference to compare alternative fields of study or even determine if studying is financially worthwhile.
  • This study aims to estimate the rate of return to a pharmacy education investment in the U.S.
  • The real rate of return estimated here establishes pharmacy as a financially viable occupation for young individuals possessing the aptitude and commitment to pursue a patient-centered career in medication management.
