2- Tuesday Pharmacy Practice News – 17th August

1 – COVID-19: leadership on the frontline is what matters when we support healthcare workers

  • The implications of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2, henceforth described as COVID-19) on healthcare systems globally are proving to be immense, with unforeseen impacts that are still to fully emerge.
  • Local and national healthcare systems, hospitals and healthcare workers have been overwhelmed by the needs of patients and limited by weaknesses in resources, staff capacity and distribution networks.
  • These circumstances impact the ergonomic conditions within which healthcare staff work and subsequently their behavioural responses.
  • In this commentary, they argue that urgent research is needed globally to bridge the evidence gap that exists on how best to support healthcare workers with the repercussions of working on the frontline of a pandemic.

2 – International survey of COVID-19 management strategies

  • While individual countries have gained considerable knowledge and experience in coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID-19) management, an international, comparative perspective is lacking, particularly regarding the measures taken by different countries to tackle the pandemic.
  • This paper elicits the views of health system staff, tapping into their personal expertise on how the pandemic was initially handled.
  • The world has progressed in its knowledge and sophistication in tackling the pandemic after early and often substantial obstacles were encountered.
  • Most WHO regions have or are in the process of responding well, although some countries have not yet instituted widespread measures known to support mitigation, for example, effective swab testing and social control measures.

3 – Provider–patient communication and hospital ratings: perceived gaps and forward thinking about the effects of COVID-19

  • This study aims to highlight clinical and operational issues, identify factors that shape patient responses in Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) and test the correlations between composite measures and overall hospital ratings.
  • From a health policy standpoint, it is imperative that hospital administrators stress open and clear communication between providers and patients to avoid problems ranging from misdiagnosis to incorrect treatment.
  • Additional research is needed to determine how the coronavirus of 2019 pandemic influences patients’ perceptions of quality and willingness to recommend hospitals at a time when nurses and physicians show symptoms of burnout due to heavy workloads and inadequate personal protective equipment.

4- Hospital medication errors: a cross-sectional study

  • Medication errors (MEs) are among the most common types of incidents reported in Australian and international hospitals.
  • There is no uniform method of reporting and reducing these errors.
  • This study aims to identify the incidence, time trends, types and factors associated with MEs in a large regional hospital in Australia.
  • MEs continue to be a problem faced by international hospitals.
  • Inexperience of health professionals and nurse–patient ratios might be the fundamental challenges to overcome.
  • Specific training of junior staff in prescribing and administering medication and nurse workload management could be possible solutions to reducing MEs in hospitals.

5 – A novel method of assessing clinical preparedness for COVID-19 and other disasters

  • The emergence of coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID-19) highlights the necessity of rapidly identifying and isolating potentially infected individuals.
  • Evaluating this preparedness requires an assessment of the full clinical system, from intake to isolation.
  • Unannounced Standardized Patients (USPs) present a nimble, sensitive methodology for assessing this readiness.
  • USPs revealed significant variation in care practices within a clinical system.
  • Utilization of this assessment methodology can provide just-in-time clinical information about readiness and safety practices, particularly during emerging outbreaks.
  • USPs will prove especially powerful as clinicians and systems return to outpatient visits while remaining vigilant about potentially infected individuals.

6 – Oral health promotion apps: an assessment of message and behaviour change potential

  • Oral health worldwide needs improving: untreated dental caries is the most common health condition affecting people globally.
  • Mobile applications (apps) have potential to provide preventative oral health interventions.
  • This study aimed to investigate the quality of available oral health promotion apps, assessing information provided and the barriers to oral health addressed using psychological frameworks.
  • The quality of information available in oral health apps requires improvement with the majority addressing only a few barriers to oral health.
  • Currently, there is no recognized scale for evaluating oral health apps: this study provides a suggested method for future app evaluation.
  • There is opportunity for a new app to be created based on health behaviour change theory which includes all the Delivering Better Oral Health messages.
