A systematic review of the role of pharmacists in vaccination services in low-and middle-income countries

  • Pharmacists’ role in vaccination has expanded in some countries with pharmacists having greater authority to perform various immunization activities, from vaccine storage, vaccine adverse event reporting, vaccination education and advocacy, to vaccine administration.
  • This study aims to identify and synthesize evidence on pharmacists’ roles in offering vaccination services in LMICs.
  • Pharmacists have the potential to play an important role in increasing access to vaccines and improving coverage, yet evidence of their role in vaccinations remains limited across LMICs.

Therapeutic decision-making in primary care pharmacy practice

  • Therapeutic decision-making is a core element of pharmacy practice, however, little has been documented about how it is enacted in practice and how it can be theorised.
  • This study aims to contribute to pharmacy education and practice theory by investigating the correspondence between explanations from primary care pharmacists in clinical practice roles about how they make decisions related to medicines therapy and a theoretical model of therapeutic decision-making.

Effectiveness of a pharmacist-led structured group-based intervention in improving medication adherence and glycaemic control among type 2 diabetes mellitus patients: A randomized controlled trial

  • A pharmacist-led structured group-based intervention (MEDIHEALTH) was formulated to improve medication adherence among Malay type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients.
  • The objective of this study was to examine the effectiveness of MEDIHEALTH and its mechanism of impact for improving medication adherence and the glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) level.
  • The MEDIHEALTH may improve medication adherence and glycaemic control among Malay T2DM patients.

Assessment of a medication management program targeting hypertension and diabetes patients: Impact on medication adherence

  • The National Health Insurance Service in South Korea has conducted a telephone outreach program to improve medication adherence for hypertension and diabetes patients since 2014.
  • This study aims to evaluate the direct outcomes of the program.
  • An insurer-coordinated telephone-administered program resulted in improvement of medication adherence among patients with hypertension and diabetes

Patient-initiated consultations in community pharmacies

  • Mobilizing pharmacists practicing in community pharmacies as a new player in primary care has recently emerged as a cost-effective strategy for clinical consultations related to minor ailments.
  • However, little is known about these consultations initiated by patients.
  • The objectives of this study were to describe patient initiated consultations in community pharmacies, and to estimate the impact of these consultations on care-seeking behaviors of patients.
