  • Human-centered design is about understanding human needs and how design can respond to these needs. With its systemic humane approach and creativity, human-centered design can play an essential role in dealing with today’s care challenges.

  • developing an understanding of people and their needs;
  • engaging stakeholders from early on and throughout the design process;
  • adopting a systems approach by systematically addressing interactions between the micro-, meso- and macro-levels of sociotechnical care systems

Human factors: the pharmaceutical supply chain as a complex sociotechnical system

  • The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated preexisting weaknesses in the global supply chain.
  • Regional assessments by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), European Medicines Agency (EMA), and independent consultants, have demonstrated various contributory causal factors requiring changes in policy, relationships, and incentives within the dynamic and developing networks.

  • In response to the coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, healthcare systems worldwide have stepped up their infection prevention and control efforts in order to reduce the spread of the infection.
  • This paper aims to illustrate how adopting a human factors and ergonomics perspective can provide insights into how clinical work systems have been adapted and reconfigured in order to keep patients and staff safe.
  • For achieving sustainable change in IPCS practices in surgery during COVID-19 and beyond we need to enhance organizational learning potentials.

Management of a parenteral opioid shortage using ASHP guidelines

  • Management of an acute shortage of parenteral opioid products at a large hospital through prescribing interventions and other guideline-recommended actions is described.
  • In early 2018, many hospitals were faced with a shortage of parenteral opioids that was predicted to last an entire year.
  • The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) has published guidelines on managing drug product shortages.
  • This article describes the application of these guidelines to manage the parenteral opioid shortage and the impact on opioid dispensing that occurred in 2018.

COVID-19 pandemic preparedness: A practical guide from an operational pharmacy perspective

  • This study aims to describe our medical center’s pharmacy services preparedness process and offer guidance to assist other institutions in preparing for surges of critically ill patients such as those experienced during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic.
  • The leadership of a department of pharmacy at an urban medical center in the US epicenter of the COVID-19 pandemic proactively created a pharmacy action plan in anticipation of a surge in admissions of critically ill patients with COVID-19.
  • Each hospital should view the COVID-19 crisis as an opportunity to internally review and enhance workflow processes, initiatives that can continue even after the resolution of the COVID-19 pandemic.
