1 – The pharmacist informatician: providing an innovative model of care during the COVID-19 crisis

  • The global coronavirus pandemic has expedited digitisation in every industry, especially healthcare, and has highlighted the potential for informatics pharmacists to provide valuable input into crisis management.
  • Informatics pharmacists can combine their clinical and information technology skills to help provide essential patient safety services related to medication management, procurement and analytics.
  • The objective of this study was to determine the key opportunities for a pharmacist informatician to improve patient care and outcomes during the COVID-19 pandemic.

2 – Assessing the need for native language in pharmacy education and practice: a survey in the UAE

  • This study aims to evaluate pharmacists’ opinions on the need for Arabic in pharmacy education and practice in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
  • A questionnaire was developed to address the study objectives and hand delivered to a stratified sample of community pharmacists and a convenience sample of pharmacists in other areas of practice in the UAE.
  • For all assessed topics and communication skills, more than half of the pharmacists agreed that they needed to be included in pharmacy education.
  • A blended learning approach that combines integrated content for native language within an English curriculum could be explored.

3 – Clinical services in community pharmacies: a scoping review of policy and social implications

  • Clinical services have allowed pharmacists to shift from product-oriented to patient-oriented services.
  • However, the policy and social implications of clinical services in community pharmacies are not well described.
  • The purpose of this scoping review was to identify these implications.
  • This review demonstrates the changing role of community pharmacists in provision of clinical services within the healthcare system.
  • The range of clinical services varies widely from one setting to another.
  • The context of community pharmacy is not well suited to these changes in practice.

4- The evolving role of community pharmacists during COVID-19 in the UAE; assessing preparedness and knowledge

  • This study aims to investigate community pharmacists’ knowledge about COVID-19 and their preparedness for the pandemic.
  • This cross-sectional online survey was conducted (in community pharmacies in the United Arab Emirates) over 3 weeks (24 May 2020 to 14 June 2020).
  • This study indicates that years of experience and good knowledge on COVID-19 were significant determinants of pharmacists’ preparedness for the pandemic control.

5 – Medication Adherence: still a problem

  • Medication taking behaviour is complex and patient adherence to a prescribed regimen is one of the primary determinants of treatment success.
  • Poor medication adherence can have varying consequences including impacting negatively on the overall effectiveness of health systems.
  • It is reported that in developed countries, only 50% of patients with a chronic disease adhere to treatment recommendations.
  • Medication non-adherence is multifactorial in nature.
  • Although ultimately an individual patient behaviour, it is not exclusively the responsibility of the patient.
  • Actively involving patients in treatment decisions when possible will have a positive effect on adherence.

6 – A rapid review and narrative synthesis of hospital to community pharmacy transfer of care services in England

  • A new discharge medicines service in England has been proposed for rollout in July 2020.
  • This study aims to appraise the evidence for hospital to community pharmacy referral services in England.
  • There is some emerging evidence that hospital to community pharmacy referral services are associated with reduced hospital readmission.
  • Service delivery reported in these studies highlights barriers and facilitators to patient recruitment, engagement and follow-up and limitations on recording and measuring meaningful outcomes.
  • Future work is recommended to take advantage of the implementation and delivery of the national service that includes the analysis of patient data at scale to substantiate evidence in this area.
