I’ve had my Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine, and here’s why my pharmacist colleagues should too

• I was offered the Pfizer BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine and, to be frank, I was scared.
• The injection was painless, just like getting my annual flu jab.
• Although the vaccine has been developed, tested and approved quickly, there has been no compromise on safety or efficacy.
• Before the Pfizer BioNTech vaccine was approved, it was studied in around 43,000 participants in an ongoing randomised placebo-controlled international trial.

Pharmacist-led atrial fibrillation case finding programme prevents an estimated 90 strokes

• Atrial fibrillation is an irregular and often rapid heart rate that occurs when the two upper chambers of your heart experience chaotic electrical signals.
• A pharmacist-led programme to identify patients with atrial fibrillation may have prevented up to 90 AF-related strokes across 23 clinical commissioning group areas, NHS England has said.

Why Everyone Should Write

• Everyone should write. You know why? Because everyone is full of ideas they’re not aware of.
• You don’t talk about these ideas, even in your own head, because you’ve never put them into words. They’re gut feelings. Intuitions.
• You use them a dozen times a day.
• Turning gut feelings into tools means understanding their origin, limits, and how they interact with other ideas. Which requires turning them into words.

Pharmacy team first in the UK to prepare vaccination for COVID-19

• The largest vaccine campaign in NHS history has begun
• The pharmacy team at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire (UHCW) trust has become the first in the UK to draw up a COVID-19 vaccine for clinical use.
• As part of the delivery of vaccines through ‘hospital hubs’ and NHS trust-led vaccination centres, hospital pharmacists have been put in charge of ensuring the safe handling and use of the vaccines.

Pharmacy needs to do much better on valproate

• A survey published by epilepsy charities found that just over one in ten (11%) women who take sodium valproate are unaware of the risks from taking it.
• And almost half (44%) of participants said they had not discussed the risks of taking the medicine with a healthcare professional in the past 12 months.
• The evidence is clear: too many women taking sodium valproate in the UK are unaware of the risks it poses to any pregnancy they may have, and community pharmacy needs to do much more to help.
