Cacao and blood sugar level

  • A study investigated the effects of cacao polyphenol-rich chocolate on postprandial glycemic and insulinemic responses and its effect on glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) secretion.
  • The results  indicate that the intake of cacao polyphenol-rich chocolate before a 50-g OGTT could enhance early insulin and GLP-1 secretion in healthy participants. Also Cacao polyphenol-rich chocolate reduces postprandial plasma glucose elevations.

What’s beyond protein restriction?

  • Protein deficiency is known to cause ectopic fat accumulation in the liver.
  • A study demonstrated the hepatic triglyceride accumulation upon male protein-restricted rats and investigated the effect of testosterone on liver lipid in castrated or testosterone-injected male rats that were fed a control or protein-restricted diet.
  • Protein restriction resulted in a significant increase in hepatic triglyceride content in castrated rats. Also, endogenous testosterone reduces hepatic lipid accumulation in male rats.

LIFE aspects and dietary intake

  • A systematic review aim to analyze the state of the art regarding the role of social status, cultural aspects and psychological distress on dietary intake older adults.
  • The results indicate the heterogeneity of the studies in the field of social and psychological determinants of dietary patterns in older adults.
  • Although it seem that Family structure, living situation, educational level and income were most consistently associated with the dietary patterns.

Weight and metabolic syndrome

A study aim to estimate the incidence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) in individuals with a healthy weight (HWI), normal-weight obesity (NWO), or overweight/obesity (OWO). The results indicate that NWO individuals showed a higher risk of MetS than healthy-weight individuals (HWI). Also NWO individuals showed a higher risk of high blood glucose than HWI. In addition NWO individuals have a similar risk ratio for MetS than OWO individuals.

What’s beyond eating potatoes?

  • A study aim to investigate the intakes of total potatoes, fried potatoes, non-fried potatoes, and sweet potatoes as dietary carbohydrate sources in relation to all-cause mortality among Chinese people.
  • The results revealed that current low and moderate, but not high levels of total potato whether  fried/non-fried potato consumption as well as sweet potato consumption were inversely associated with all-cause mortality among Chinese people.

Soft drinks and depression

  • Consumption of soft drinks has become a serious public health issue worldwide.
  • A prospective study aim to investigate the association between soft drink consumption and the development of depressive symptoms among Japanese workers.
  • The participants were free from depressive symptoms at baseline and attended a 3-y follow-up assessment.  The results suggested that greater consumption of soft drinks would increase the likelihood of exhibiting depressive symptoms.
