1- Celiac disease and GFD

  • A study aim to identify the relationship between adherence to a gluten-free diet (GFD) and demographic characteristics, knowledge, attitudes and beliefs regarding celiac disease.
  • Adherence to GFD was assessed using the ‘Celiac Dietary Adherence Test’ (CDAT) and ‘GFD-Score’.
  • The results indicate that Being female is associated with lower adherence to GFD. Also, Emotional wellbeing and support group membership is associated with greater adherence.

2- Folic acid and pregnancy

  •  A study aimed to investigate the association between maternal FA-deficiency and congenital eye defects and whether maternal diet deficient in FA alters the expression of collagen IV and laminin-1 as a possible mechanism of ocular malformations.
  • The results showed that Maternal FA-deficient diet for a short-term period causes eye developmental defects and induces over expression of both collagen IV and laminin-1.
  • Malformations observed are probably related to alterations in the expression of basement membrane proteins.

3- Morning Fish oil

  • A randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind, parallel-group trial aimed to confirm the effects of the time of FO intake on TG in 20 healthy Japanese adults.
  • They were assigned to one group that consumed sausages enriched with FO in the morning and a placebo in the evening and another were revised.
  • The results indicate that Fish oil intake in the morning suppressed serum triglycerides, total saturated fatty acids and n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids efficiently than that taken in the evening.

4- Broccoli as a functional food

  • A study aimed at investigating the effects of broccoli consumption on lipid and glucose metabolism and gut microbiota.
  • Male C57BL/6J mice 7-8 weeks old were fed libitum with a normal diet supplemented with or without 10% (w/w) broccoli florets or broccoli stalks.
  • After 17 weeks, blood and tissues were collected. The results showed that Long-term whole broccoli supplementation decreased inflammation, improved lipid parameters, insulin sensitivity and altered the gut microbiome in mice.

5- Lycopene effects

  • A  systematic review study aimed to assess and compare the hypotensive effects of different tomato-related preparations through a network meta-analysis based on randomized controlled trials.
  • The results indicate that Standardized tomato extract (STE) significantly decreased SBP compared to placebo in a mixed population of healthy volunteers and hypertensive patients. Also, No significant BP effects were seen with other forms of tomato, Lycopene and related products.

6- Antimicrobial and antibiofilm effects of Thyme

  • An in vitro study aim to determine biofilm formations of three different abscess cultures and to investigate antimicrobial and antibiofilm effects of clary sage, clove and thyme oils against the identified bacterial strain isolated from the highest biofilm forming abscess culture.  The results indicate that Thyme oil having the lowest inhibitory concentration and the highest antibiofilm effect has a good potential to be used as an antimicrobial and antibiofilm agent for the management of abscesses with P. mirabilis infections.
