GLIM and malnutrition

  • Malnutrition is common and related to negative prognosis in patients with gastric cancer (GC). The Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM), a novel consensus for the diagnosis of malnutrition, was proposed recently.
  • An observational cohort study aim to analyze the relationship between GLIM-defined malnutrition and the OS of patients with GC.
  • The findings support the effectiveness of GLIM in diagnosing malnutrition and predicting the OS in patients with GC.

Preoperative Malnutrition and LVAD

  • Preoperative malnutrition has been correlated to post-operative complications in advanced heart failure patients undergoing placement of left ventricular assist device (LVAD).
  • A retrospective cohort study aim to determine if nutritional risk scores could identify a subset of LVAD patients at high risk of adverse events.
  • The results indicate that Nutritional Risk Index NRI, Nutrition Risk in Critically ill NUTRIC, and The Prognostic Nutritional Index PNI did not identify subset of patients at high risk for the composite outcome.

Bovine lactoferrin and diarrhea

  • A study aim to explore the dose effect of bovine lactoferrin (bLF) fortification on the morbidity of diarrhea and respiratory tract infections in weaned anemic infants.
  • The results indicate that The bLF-fortified formula was effective in reducing the morbidity of diarrhea and RTIs in anemic infants, with the 76 mg/100 g bLF-fortified formula exhibiting a stronger effect. So, The bLF fortification could be a new strategy for the prevention of diarrhea and RTIs in anemic infants.

FFQ and nutrient intake

  • There is a partly lack of culture-specific dietary assessment instruments to estimate the usual food and nutrient intake of Arab children.
  • A study aimed to describe the methodology used in translating the 2004 Block food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) for kids to Arabic and to evaluate the reliability of the FFQ in a population of fifth grade Kuwaiti children.
  • The results indicate that The modified FFQ is a modestly reliable instrument for measuring usual dietary intake in Kuwaiti children.

Individualized nutrition support in very old aged patients

  • A randomized-controlled EFFORT trial,  analyzed data of patients at nutritional risk (Nutritional Risk Screening 2002 [NRS] score ≥3 points) with aging-related vulnerability randomized to receive protocol-guided individualized nutritional support to reach specific protein and energy goals (intervention group), or to standard usual hospital food (control group).
  • The findings suggest Significant improvements in patients receiving individualized nutritional support for longer term mortality at 180 days.

Pumpkin and allergy

  •  There is some evidence that pumpkin seeds may exert allergenic effects and induce severe life-threatening anaphylaxis. Few descriptions of allergic reactions associated with pumpkin have been published, especially in children. To date, three cases of pumpkin pulp and two seed cases have been reported among children.
  • The new case report describes a case of pumpkin seed anaphylaxis in a child with good tolerance of pulp.
