  • A study aim to examine the effects of protein intake on physical performance in critically ill adult patients admitted to the ICU.
  • Adult patients mechanically ventilated over 48 hours were classified into two groups based on the amount of protein intake, above 1.0 g/kg/day (high-protein group) or below that (low-protein group).
  • The  findings indicate that a sufficient amount of protein intake may lead to a higher rate of recovery to independent walking before discharge from the hospital.

Teduglutide and short bowel syndrome.

  • Teduglutide, a GLP-2 analogue (TED), offers a new, effective therapeutic alternative to boost intestinal adaptation.
  • Here we report the clinical cases of 2 female patients who had received TED for 36 and 41 months. The experience shows that even after long-term treatment, the “iatrogenic hyper adaptation” process obtained with TED results temporary, drug-dependent and vanishes with the suspension of therapy.
  • Also, These clinical cases suggest that in SBS-CIF patients receiving TED, this treatment has to be administered lifelong.

HFD and Insulin resistance

  • A study aim To verify the effects of consumption of a high-fat diet (HFD) combined with fructose-rich beverages (FRT) in promoting metabolic and physiological changes associated with insulin resistance.
  • Thirty-two male Wistar rats were randomly allocated into four groups  that received either a standard diet (CON), HFD, FRT, or HFD + FRT for 30 days. The results indicate that Consumption of HFD + FRT promotes insulin resistance, increases inflammatory cytokines, and modulates histomorphometric parameters of the liver, pancreas, and adipose tissue.

Phase angle and cardiovascular patients

  • an observational study aimed to examine whether the preoperative phase angle (PhA) measured by bioelectrical impedance analysis was associated with a hospital-acquired functional decline in older cardiovascular surgery patients.
  • The results indicate that the PhA is likely to be a comprehensive indicator of physical health that indicates nutritional status, physical function, and geriatric syndrome (frailty/sarcopenia), and is an important predictor of hospital-acquired functional decline in older cardiovascular surgery patients.
