Low carbohydrate diet and postpartum period

  • A  prospective cohort study  aimed to explore the association between postpartum low carbohydrate diet (LCD) scores and glucose levels. Dietary information during the first month after delivery was assessed via a validated food-frequency questionnaire. The overall, animal, and plant LCD scores were determined based on percentages of energy from carbohydrate, protein, and fat. The findings indicated that animal LCD score during puerperium may be positively associated with FPG levels at early postpartum period in Chinese women.

The role of MG treatment in COVID-19

  • The viral entry of SARS-CoV-2 requires host-expressed TMPRSS2 to facilitate the viral spike (S) protein priming. A study aims to test the hypothesis that Mg treatment leads to DNA methylation changes in TMPRSS2. The results indicate that Mg treatment increased 5-mC DNA methylation at cg16371860 in the TMPRSS2. These findings, if confirmed, provide another mechanism for the role of Mg intervention for the prevention of COVID-19 and treatment of early and mild disease.

Low tongue pressure and swallowing

  • A study aimed to evaluate the effect of low tongue pressure on the improvement of swallowing function in patients with sarcopenic dysphagia and ongoing dysphagia or physical rehabilitation. In addition, it investigated whether sarcopenic dysphagia at admission was associated with the severity of malnutrition. The results indicate that Probable sarcopenic dysphagia with low tongue pressure was associated with poorer improvement in swallowing function and severe malnutrition during post-acute rehabilitation.

Vitamin D and lipid profile in children

  • A randomized, triple-masked, placebo-controlled crossover trial aim to evaluate the effect of cholecalciferol supplementation on body composition and metabolic profile of children aged 4-11 years with hypertriglyceridemia. The two groups, supplemented and placebo, received 5 drops of cholecalciferol (equivalent to 1000 International Units/day) and 5 drops of sunflower oil, respectively, daily for 12 weeks. The results indicate that Cholecalciferol supplementation was able to improve the lipid profile of children with hypertriglyceridemia, without altering body composition.

Probiotics and  iNKT cells.

  • Invariant natural killer T (iNKT) cells, which are depleted in obese individuals, play important roles in preventing diet-induced obesity.  A study aim to investigate whether Probiotic supplementation can alter the gut microbiota and immunomodulation in obesity via its effect on adipose iNKT cells. The results indicate that Probiotic intervention alleviated weight gain, improved metabolic parameters, and reduced adipose inflammation in HFD-induced obesity. These effects seem to depend on the restoration of visceral adipose iNKT cells.

OO- or SO-based IVLE and pre-albumin level

  • Olive oil (OO)-based intravenous lipid emulsion (IVLE) may have biological advantages for nutrition and inflammation status compared to soybean oil (SO)-based IVLE. A study aim to compare the pre-albumin levels during infusion of OO- or SO-based IVLE in patients receiving PN in acute care setting. The results indicate that OO-based IVLE was not inferior to SO-based IVLE in maintaining or increasing pre-albumin level.
