Malnutrition in developing countries

  • For early identification of malnutrition, mid upper arm circumference (MUAC) measurements has been suggested as an easy, accurate and low-cost method.
  • A study aim to construct age and gender specific MUAC reference centiles, and define and validate cut offs for assessment of under and over nutrition in 5–17 year-old Indian children.
  • The results were very helpful and the data may also be used in children with cancer and other chronic disorders with growth failure.

Melatonin and obesity

  • According to in vivo and in vitro studies, melatonin appears as a potential supplement for obesity reduction. A systematic review with meta-analysis  aimed to review the literature on randomized clinical trials that evaluated the effects of melatonin supplementation on anthropometric indicators of obesity in humans.
  • We included studies that evaluated melatonin supplementation’s effects, compared to placebo, on anthropometric measures in people aged 18 and over.
  • The results demonstrated that melatonin supplementation was responsible for significantly reducing body weight.

Micronutrients and COVID-19

  • A Cross –sectional  study aim To compare the serum level of micronutrients with the normal amount and assess the association among them and the severity of disease and inflammatory cytokines in patients with COVID-19.
  • We recorded data on demographics, anthropometric, and medical history.
  • The results indicate that Lower serum levels of vitamin D, Zn, and Mg were involved in severe COVID-19.

Selenium and autoimmune diseases.

  • Observational epidemiological studies have reported a relationship between selenium status and risk of autoimmune diseases. However, the associations are susceptible to confounding or reverse causality.
  • Thus,  a study aimed to investigate the potential causal associations of selenium concentrations with the risk of common autoimmune diseases using a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) design.
  • The results suggested a protective role of selenium on the risk of SLE.

High fat diet and weight loss

A study aim to assess the effectiveness of a low carbohydrate high fat (LCHF) diet with and without a time restricted feeding (TRF) protocol on weight loss and  participating in three sequential dietary interventions (standard caloric deficit diet, LCHF and LCHF+TRF) on weight loss outcomes. The results indicate that participating in sequential diets may be associated with greater absolute weight loss, and likelihood of achieving a clinically significant weight loss.

Human Milk

  • Dietary patterns are a useful tool to study the impact of overall maternal diet on human milk (HM) composition beyond single foods or nutrients.
  • A study aims to identify dietary patterns among Chinese lactating women and to assess associations with HM macronutrient composition.
  • The results indicate that Maternal dietary patterns with high proportions of animal and plant-based foods were associated with higher fat and lower protein concentrations in Colostrum.
