Malnutrition and hospitalized children

  • A study aim to evaluate the nutrition risk profile of hospitalized children with Electronic Health Records (EHR)-based nutrition risk screening (NRS).
  • Nutrition risk scores using the Screening Tool for Assessment of Malnutrition in Pediatrics (STAMP), length of stay (LOS) and costs of hospitalization were recorded.
  • The results revealed that Surgeries, specific disease and infancy were important HNR risk factors.
  • HNR scores using STAMP might predict prolonged LOS and higher medical costs.

Tocopherols and adipose tissues

  • A study aim to evaluate the effect of the dietary supplementation of an α- and γ-tocopherol mixture (1:5) in the adipose tissue expansion, hepatic steatosis and expression of inflammatory markers, induced by a high-fat diet (HFD) consumption in mice.
  • The results suggests that α- and γ-Tocopherols (1:5 ratio) supplementation attenuates the adipocyte enlargement, hepatic steatosis and metabolic inflammation induced by HFD, in association with PPAR-α/NF-κB modulation.

Adequate hydration and Sarcopenia

  • Cancer patients are affected by a loss of cell membrane integrity due to electrolyte imbalance between the intra- and extracellular fluid.
  • Cell membrane integrity and hydration status can be assessed according to the phase angle.
  • A cross-sectional study conducted with cancer patients assessed PhA and hydration status using bioelectrical impedance analysis .
  • The results highlighted the importance of adequate hydration and evaluation of fluid status via BIA as a new recommendation to prevent Sarcopenia.

Anti-inflammatory diet and endometriosis

  • Increased risk of preterm birth (PTB) in is considered to be associated with chronic inflammatory conditions.
  • A study conducted to investigate the correlation of a pre-pregnancy anti-inflammatory diet with obstetric outcomes in women with endometriosis.
  • The results revealed that anti-inflammatory diet at preconception period reduce both the risk of low birth weight and preterm birth specifically PTB before 34 weeks and LBW <1500 g among women with endometriosis.

Neoadjuvant treatment and Gastric cancer

  • Influence of body composition on clinical outcomes in patients with gastric cancer (GC) undergoing radical gastrectomy after Neoadjuvant treatment (NT) remains unclear.
  • A retrospective study aim to investigate the association between body composition prior to NT or after NT and clinical outcomes in GC patients with multimodal treatments.
  • The results indicate that Body composition analysis could predict NT-related adverse events, postoperative complications and long-term survival in multimodal treatments for GC.

Malnutrition and anorexia nervosa

  • A prospective study  aim to examine muscle strength and Peak Expiratory Flow (PEF) in severely undernourished patients with AN at admission and after 5 weeks of renutrition by tube feeding.
  • The results indicate that Extremely undernourished patients with AN present a decrease of PEF and muscle-skeletal strength predominant on axial muscles. Both are associated with severity of malnutrition and liver damage.
  • Partial recovery was observed after 5 weeks of enteral nutrition.
