What’s beyond speed eating?

  • A prospective study investigated the association between eating speed and metabolic syndrome in a Japanese working population.
  • Eating speed was self-reported and categorized as slow, medium, or fast.
  • The study results revealed that eating speed was positively associated with increased likelihood of developing central obesity, but not associated with high blood pressure, high fasting plasma glucose, high triglycerides, and low HDL-C.

Obesity related genes

  • An article aim to review the epigenetic effects of certain phytochemicals on the expression of obesity-related genes.
  • According to the Developmental Origins of Adult Health and Disease hypothesis, obesity is likely included by epigenetic changes.
  • Restoration of epigenetic dysregulation in obesity-related genes by epigenetic modifiers may be a new treatment option for obesity. Certain phytochemicals such as tea polyphenols, curcumin, genistein, isothiocyanates, citrus isoflavonoids may have a therapeutic potential in the management of obesity.

Malnutrition and mortality in elderly

  • A retrospective study conducted at Geriatrics Division of Trieste aim to evaluate the nutritional status of hospitalized patients and other risk items.
  • Data of patients over 65 years were collected by the Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA), the Activity of Daily Living scale (ADL). The results indicate that Undiagnosed and untreated malnutrition is known to be a cause of mortality in the elderly hospitalized people.
  • Especially for frailty old patients with low ADL.

Malnutrition and pneumonia

  • A retrospective cohort study aim to examine the effect of improved nutritional status on activities of daily living (ADLs) and dysphagia in elderly patients with pneumonia who were admitted to acute care hospitals.
  • Patients were divided into two groups based on the Mini Nutritional Assessment Short-Form (MNA-SF).
  • The study concludes that Nutritional improvement is associated with improvements in ADL and dysphagia in patients with pneumonia and malnutrition.

Omentin and obesity

  • Omentin is a secretory protein produced in visceral adipose tissue. A study aim to determine the association of Omentin with anthropometric, physiologic, and biochemical parameters in obese individuals.
  • The results revealed that Obese individuals have lower Omentin concentration than those of normal weight.
  • Also, Insulin level, percentage of body adipose tissue, and waist circumference are independent determinants of serum Omentin concentration in obese individuals.

Nutritional interventions in obesity

  • A systematic review  of randomized controlled trials aim to summarize the effects, potentialities, and limitations of nutritional interventions aimed at managing obesity in primary and secondary health care settings, highlighting the most effective strategies and theories.
  • The results indicate that Most trials presented better weight loss results with the association of calorie restrictions and theory-based interventions delivered by dietitians or psychologists.
