Obesity in COVID-19 era, implications for mechanisms, comorbidities, and prognosis: a review and meta-analysis

  • Recent studies have shown that obesity is associated with the severity of coronavirus disease (COVID-19).
  • This study reviewed clinical studies to clarify the obesity relationship with COVID-19 severity, comorbidities, and discussing possible mechanisms.
  • Obesity should be considered as an independent risk factor for the severity of COVID-19.
  • Paying more attention to preventing weight gain in obese patients with COVID-19 infection in early levels of disease is crucial during this pandemic.

Necessity of 2 Doses of the Pfizer and Moderna COVID-19 Vaccines

  • Two doses of the Pfizer and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines are necessary to confer adequate immunity.
  • The new vaccines for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) are highly effective, but controversy exists about whether a second dose should be delayed in order to immunize more people.
  • The second dose is necessary and should be given.
  • When the vaccines were first tested, a relatively weak immune reaction was found within a few weeks after people received the first dose of vaccine, followed by a strong reaction when a second dose was given.
  • The next set of trials looked at the ability to prevent COVID-19 infection after receiving the 2 doses of vaccine.
  • These vaccines were highly effective in preventing infections that cause symptoms after both the first and second doses.

  • Following implementation of vaccination, reports of anaphylaxis after the first dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine emerged.
  • Anaphylaxis is a life-threatening allergic reaction that occurs rarely after vaccination, with onset typically within minutes to hours.

Surveillance testing reveals a significant proportion of hospitalized patients with SARS-CoV-2 are asymptomatic

  • The proportion of positive patients admitted to acute-care hospitals for reasons other than coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) is unknown.
  • These patients potentially put other patients and healthcare workers at risk of infection.
  • The objective of this study was to define the proportion of asymptomatic patients admitted with severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2).
  • The proportion of asymptomatic patients admitted with SARS-CoV-2 was significant. Identifying and isolating asymptomatic patients likely prevented exposure and development of hospital-acquired COVID-19 cases among healthcare workers.

Azithromycin susceptibility testing of Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi: impact on management of enteric fever

  • Correctly determining azithromycin resistance matters where drug-resistant enteric fever is common and oral therapy necessary.
  • As cephalosporin resistance becomes more common, azithromycin will be key for treating enteric fever and optimizing practice in susceptibility testing will be crucial.
  • Practitioners should be aware of key steps to minimize error in azithromycin susceptibility testing, and should be alert for possible errors when reported azithromycin resistance is discordant with known prevalence of resistance.

  • While some studies have demonstrated notable associations between influenza and adverse pregnancy outcomes, the findings have contrasted with other studies.
  • This meta-analysis was conducted to assess the effect of influenza infection on pregnancy outcomes.
  • Influenza virus infection was associated with an increased risk of stillbirth, but its effect on preterm birth, fetal death, SGA and LBW is still uncertain.
