1 – Echinacea reduces antibiotic usage in children through respiratory tract infection prevention: a randomized, blinded, controlled clinical trial

  • In children, up to 30% of viral respiratory tract infections (RTIs) develop into bacterial complications associated with pneumonia, sinusitis or otitis media to trigger a tremendous need for antibiotics.
  • This study investigated the efficacy of Echinacea for the prevention of viral RTIs, for the prevention of secondary bacterial complications and for reducing rates of antibiotic prescriptions in children.
  • This study results support the use of Echinacea for the prevention of RTIs and reduction of associated antibiotic usage in children.

2- Patient hematology during hospitalization for viral pneumonia caused by SARS-CoV-2 and non-SARS-CoV-2 agents: a retrospective study

  • Hematological comparison of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) and other viral pneumonias can provide insights into COVID-19 treatment.
  • In this retrospective case–control single-center study, they compared the data of 126 patients with viral pneumonia during different outbreaks.
  • One of the COVID-19 characteristics was a continuous decline in the hemoglobin level. The neutrophil count was related to the aggravation of COVID-19 and SARS.
  • Thrombocytopenia occurred in patients with SARS and severe COVID-19 even at the recovery stage.

3- Predictors of the prolonged recovery period in COVID-19 patients: a cross-sectional study

  • The clinical course of COVID-19 may vary significantly.
  • The presence of comorbidities prolongs the recovery time.
  • The recovery in patients with mild-to-moderate symptoms might take 10 days, while in those with a critical illness or immunocompromised status could take 15 days.
  • Considering the lack of data about predictors that could affect the recovery time, they conducted this study to identify them.
  • This study supports that dyspnea is a predictor of recovery time.
  • It seems like optimal management of the comorbidities plays the most crucial role in recovery from COVID-19.

4- Evaluation of the use and attitudes of pregnant and postpartum women towards medicine utilization during pregnancy in the United Arab Emirates: A national cross‐sectional study

  • Pregnancy period is of high concern to every woman. Knowledge about medication use needs to be highlighted at such a critical stage.
  • This study aimed to assess pregnant and postpartum women’s use and attitude regarding the utilization of medications during pregnancy in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
  • During pregnancy, ladies were more moderate and doubter toward the drug, healthcare providers should know about such mentalities while encouraging pregnant ladies to take prescription

5- Frequency, signs and symptoms, and criteria adopted for long COVID: a systematic review 

  • This study aims to identify, systematically evaluate and summarise the best available evidence on the frequency of long COVID (post‐acute COVID‐19 syndrome), its clinical manifestations and the criteria used for diagnosis.
  • The frequency of long COVID reached up to 80% over the studies included and occurred between 3 to 24 weeks after acute phase or hospital discharge.
  • Chest pain, fatigue, dyspnea and cough were the most reported clinical manifestations attributed to the condition.
  • Based on this systematic review findings, there is an urgent need to understand this emerging, complex and challenging medical condition.

6- Effectiveness of ozone therapy in addition to conventional treatment on mortality in patients with COVID‐19

  • In this study, they aimed to investigate the effectiveness of ozone therapy, which is one of the integrative medicine applications that has been used safely for many years, on the prevalence of mortality in patients receiving COVID‐19 treatment.
  • In this study, the findings suggested that the administration of ozone therapy along with the conventional medical treatment in patients hospitalized for COVID‐19 could reduce mortality.
